Anyone here freelancing in Salesforce while traveling full-time? I’m just getting started and trying to figure out what’s realistic before I hit the road. A few super-specific things I can’t find clear answers to:
- MFA and IP whitelisting on the move: How do you handle Salesforce/SSO MFA when swapping SIMs and countries? Any tips for using Authenticator apps vs SMS, hardware keys, backup codes, or VPNs without getting locked out by location/IP rules?
- Remote dev setup: Is it worth doing a cloud dev environment (e.g., Codespaces/remote VM with VS Code + SFDX) so no client data sits on my laptop? Any latency or CLI quirks with scratch orgs if everything’s in the cloud?
- Flaky internet reality: What’s your workflow for Flow/Apex changes and deployments on unstable connections? Offline-friendly tools, commit strategies, or scratch-org scripts to avoid breaking stuff mid-sync?
- Data privacy while nomading: Do clients restrict which countries you can work from? How do you handle DPAs/SCCs and “approved regions” in contracts? Any insurance (pro liability/cyber) that actually covers cross-border Salesforce work?
- Getting gigs as a nomad: Best channels for landing short, fully remote Salesforce contracts (beginner-friendly)? Any niche you’ve found especially portable (admin + Flow, Experience Cloud, basic integrations) and decent for entry-level rates?
- Time zones as a feature: If you’re deploying off-hours from another region, how do you sell that benefit without burning out? How do you plan sandbox refreshes and release windows across time zones?
- Client network constraints: For clients who lock Salesforce behind VPN or office IPs, what’s worked-conditional access, jump boxes/bastions, zero-trust device checks? How do you negotiate secure-but-flexible access as a contractor?
- Exam logistics: Has anyone taken Salesforce proctored exams while traveling? Hotel Wi‑Fi or co-work tips to avoid getting flagged or disconnected?
- Gear and security: Minimal travel setup that still feels enterprise-safe? Thinking hardware security key, travel router, encrypted laptop, maybe a portable monitor-anything else that’s been a game-changer?
- Payments/taxes basics: If clients are in the US/EU and I’m moving around, what invoicing/payment platforms are least painful? Anything to watch for with withholding or double taxation as a solo freelancer?
If you’ve got templates for clauses like “approved work locations,” or a checklist for a nomad-safe Salesforce setup, I’d love to see it. Also open to hearing “don’t do X” horror stories so I can dodge beginner mistakes.
